Que tal amigos? Me llamo Betsy! My interests include swimming marathons, drinking café con leche, dancing, and eating a strictly vegetarian diet. I’ve been training hard for my next marathon so I’m spending a lot of time in the water, as most adult sea turtles do. You know what I’ve noticed recently? There are way too many longline fisheries out there! Each year, foraging and migrating sea turtles like me are accidentally captured, injured or killed by fishermen using longlines to catch tuna, swordfish, sharks and other species. A longline consists of a mainline 40 or more miles long with thousands of additional lines and hooks attached to it. What if I were to get tangled up in one of these fishing lines during the Tour de Turtles, then I wouldn’t even be able to finish the race! I’d hate to disappoint my fans and sponsors at Shark Reef Aquarium. That’s why I need your help to spread the word about the dangers of longline fisheries to your families and friends. If I win this whole thing, I’ll treat everyone to a nice dinner of some sustainable seafood!
I was named by my Sponsor,
Shark Reef. Check out my marathon migration map, where you can follow along as I swim to raise awarness about the threat of Commercial Longline Fisheries to sea turtles. Please help me raise awareness about my cause by supporting me!
